Suggested Guidelines for SPA Announcers

Curt Wilson's father, Dick Wilson, is considered one of the finest announcers that Diving has ever had. Dick Wilson has announced 3 Olympic games and countless Senior and Junior National and International Competitions.

I have had several conversations with my father regarding his philosophy and views on the announcers position and proper conduct to facilitate a competition.

I am paraphrasing and these are merely suggestions to improve the quality of our local announcing.

1. The competition is for the divers.

  1. Any conversation or thought process that does not pertain to the diver on the board and that specific dive should be kept OFF Mic.

    1. The intoxicating use of power and amplification should not be abused.
    2. This includes ALL instructions to the table.
    3. This includes conversations with the head referee, unless asked to be on Mic, for example, if the head referee asks that a dive be repeated.

  2. It is most common that we have simultaneous events. It is the announcers obligation to be aware of the other competition and to be as unobtrusive as possible in both competitions.

  3. The rules are such that when a diver asks to change a specific dive, it is not the announcers job to inform the diver that that dive that the diver is asking to change is listed somewhere else on their list and are they sure that they want to change it at this time. If, when the change is made, the computer informs the announcer that that is an illegal change for some reason, the announcer should then inform the diver of this.

  4. Commentary or personal asides should not exist on the announcers Microphone. Editorializing or proof of wit, knowledge and or humor should be reserved for Karaoke night, these asides are always at the divers’ expense.

  5. Advertising for upcoming meets, future events and snack bar flashes should be reserved for warm up times in BOTH contests. If a snack bar announcement needs to be made, it should wait at least until the end of the round.

  6. Calling for help over the mic should be done when there is not a diver on the board in the other competition that could be distracted by such an announcement.

  7. Announcing the results should be done near the awards presentation whenever possible or at least in a manner fully aware that another competition is still going on, if that is the case, and again with the intent to not distract from whatever competition is still engaged.

  8. Any trouble or question about pronunciation of a divers name should be taken care of when the diving order is stated. An invitation to correct the announcer should be made at that time and the announcer should do their best to make that correction by writing the phonetic pronunciation on the divers sheet so as not to forget the correction.
2. The announcer is an assistant referee for the competition and as such should have a fair understanding of the rule book. The announcer should assist the judges and other referees regarding announced dives and positions that the diver performs if different than what was announced. This responsibility was added due to varying sound systems and the fact that judges and also the head referee might not hear the announced dive and/or position or the board (platform). At no time should the announcer make a unilateral decision.

Coral Minton, Treasurer for US Diving, just called to let me know of a change in US Diving Insurance coverage that has just been approved and will take effect January 1, 2003. Hopefully it will not impact any of the teams, clubs or facilities in any negative way whatsoever.

US Diving Insurance will provide 1 million dollars worth of general liability coverage and the change will be that there is no longer 4 million dollars in excess liability coverage.

Most of you are already aware that all insurance seems to be going up this year and this was necessary for US Diving to make this change in order to stay within their budget.

If you have any questions or concerns, you should contact Coral Minton or Todd Smith.

I want to take this opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year.

Curt Wilson

Subj: REMINDER TO USE CURRENT DIVE SHEET PROGRAMS
Date: 3/1/02 9:38:03 AM Pacific Standard Time
From: AnnVincent

The Dive Verifier form has been updated for this year and is attached again for you to use and EMAIL (COACHES: Please forward this email with the program attached to your parents).

HOWEVER many people are using OLD VERSIONS that are not accurate because the DD's changed and rules changed over the years. PLEASE BE SURE YOU ARE USING DVFM10.xls This form number prints at the bottom of the sheet, with the note that your sheet is correct.
IF there is no form number printing at the bottom of your sheet...THE PROGRAM IS REALLY OLD. Cerritos is still receiving forms done on Dvfm002. You will need to download this attached program and type your dives in to it. Then save the program for each board your diver dives for your records...THEN access back to it whenever you want to update your dives. SAVE: 1meter.xls and 3Meter.xls and platform.xls
ALWAYS remember to ENABLE the macros when you open the program for it to check the dives against the current rules.

I can't tell you how pleased I am that the form is being used by divers to turn in their sheets for the upcoming meets. It makes it so much easier for the hosting team to prepare the events knowing these sheets are already correct. WE ALL THANK YOU.

NOTE: HIGH SCHOOL DIVERS....please be sure you are using Dvfm014HS.xls This is also available at http://www.mvndive.com/UTILITY.shtml

We work hard to make sure you have the most up to date information and tools available to use...PLEASE USE THEM...THANKS
Ann Vincent

Subj: SPA info and updates
Date: 12/10/01 11:40:44 AM Pacific Standard Time
From: curtis.wilson@home.com (Curtis Wilson)

In keeping in line with the most recent rule changes by US Diving that will become effective January 1, 2002. Please make the following corrections to the JO information page before passing them out to any diver or their parents.
1. All "13 & Under" Events should be crossed out and clearly labeled "12 - 13". Only Divers that are 12 or 13 years of age will be competing in this age group.
2. All "10-11" Events should be crossed out and labeled "11 & Under". This is a huge change in the prestige of this event as it is now a national event in the Winter Season.
